this Article is featured in Guilloteen vol.1 which can be purchased here It may seem counterintuitive to use mainstream when talking about riotgrrrl but it is important to talk about the riotgrrrl seen in the media. As we are having more antiracist conversations while simultaneously researching riotgrrrl for the zine it is hard to disregard the majority of photographs, articles, and documentaries that focus solely on cis white women in the riotgrrrl scene and that is an issue. My introduction to riotgrrrl was through bands like bikini kill and bratmobile, I had very few black artists on my playlists of punk women and it took a lot of research but i found some amazing bands. But the issue was how I didnt know about them until i noticed how white my playlists were and began acively seeking out artists of color whereas bands like Bratmobile were sort of just a given in riotgrrrl bands i should listen to. The riotgrrl culture has been whitewashed which goes against what being a riotgrrrl is. To be a riotgrrrl is to be a revolutionary its to fight against unjust systems that treat us like we are less than, yet somehow we have ignored a largely oppressed group and tailored riotgrrrl around what others want from us, not who we actually believe we should be. Take a look at your view of riotgrrrl, the bands you listen to the media you enjoy and ask yourself who is this made for and do they represent what this movement means?
